Kid Pan Alley: Music

Whispering in Spanish

(Kid Pan Alley w/Raul Malo)
by Paul Reisler & Ms. Davis’ 3rd grade class
It was a small class of English as a Second Language kids Only a couple of them spoke English well and the their Spanish was all different as they were all from different countries.
We wanted to write something in both English and Spanish. One girl helped by translating for me.
It started with one of them saying something so quietly that i couldn't quite hear it. I asked how do you say "whisper" in Spanish and that became the idea for this beautiful love song.
I thought they said "habla poquito" and I said doesn't that mean "I speak a little Spanish." But they insisted it meant whisper. Big problem in translation. When we went to record Raul agreed that it meant speak a little, so we called his mom who told us it was bajito. Guess I misunderstood the kids but thankfully it rhymed and fit in the same space.

I could trip on the wind, slip on the rain
Wander around, forget what to say
If I fell from the sky, I’d land in the clouds
I’d whisper I love you right out loud

Hablo bajito te quiero
I don’t know why
Hablo bajito te quiero
I’ll be your lullaby

Let’s go see the stars, dance on the moon
Sing in the sunrise like the nightingales do
We’ll follow Orion as he traces the sky
And whisper te amo, all through the night

Hablo bajito te quiero
I don’t know why
Hablo bajito te quiero
I’ll be your lullaby

Hablo bajito te quiero
I don’t know why
Hablo bajito te quiero
I’ll be your lullaby
